Question - Special Species Timber - Craft Log High Value
Wednesday 24 May 2023
Ms ARMITAGE question to LEADER of the GOVERNMENT in the LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL, Mrs HISCUTT
[2.38 p.m.]
With regard to Sustainable Timber Tasmania (SST):
(1) Reported special species timber volumes for the 2021-22 financial year do not include the 'Craft Log High Value' volumes produced and delivered to Island Specialty Timbers (IST). Can the Leader please advise:
(a) What is the definition of, or specification for, 'Craft Log High Value'?
(b) What are the volumes of such logs produced and delivered to Island Specialty Timbers for the 2021-22 and the current year to date?
(c) The log volumes by species for each IST location?
(d) Have any 'Craft Log High Value' logs been transported to IST's southern region from SST's north-west region in either year? If so, can you please advise the volume transported by species and the total cost of transport per year.
ANSWER
I thank the member for her question.
(1) (a) 'Craft Log High Value' is an internal term used which is applied to timber recovered for significant feature and/or colour but that does not meet current specifications within STT's system for other logs. It commonly applies to figured eucalypt, burls and unusual arisings such as musk, banksia and ti-tree.
(b) The volume of such timber processed and delivered to Island Specialty Timbers Geeveston for the 2021-22 year is approximately 357 cubic metres. The volume of such timber processed and delivered to IST Geeveston from 1 July 2022 to date, being 15 May 2023, is approximately 177 cubic metres.
(d) No 'Craft Log High Value' has been transported to IST Geeveston from the north‑west region from 2021 to date.
Note: Additionally, no Huon pine logs have been transported from IST Strahan to IST Geeveston in the past two years.
Ms Armitage - Sorry, you missed out (c). You went from (b) to (d).
Mrs HISCUTT - You are absolutely right and it is not here.
Mr Willie - Just make it up.
Mrs HISCUTT - Just make it up. I will pursue that. Well noted, thank you.
